A century ago death was typically sudden from infections, accidents, or childbirth. Today chronic illness is common, as a result of medications, treatments and surgeries now available. Although most chronic diseases today have a pattern of decline, ending in death, many report feeling caught off-guard when they are told they have a limited time to live.
