MOUNT
VERNON MOUNT VERNON is located in Knox County, what was once known as the United Military Lands, so called because this portion of Ohio was appropriated by an Act of Congress on the first of June, 1796, to satisfy certain claims of the officers and soldiers of the Revolutionary War. In recognition of its rich history, pleasant tree-lined streets, diversified economy, historic homes, and high quality of life, Mount Vernon was named an All American City in 1965 by Look Magazine and the National Municipal League. The city is proud of that honor and has maintained the standards that brought that high acclaim. In 1990, Mount Vernon was featured on the cover of the Ohio Magazine and praised for its elegant charm. Once again recognized by this magazine in 1994, Mount Vernon celebrated the honor of being named Ohios "Most Livable Community." The city is governed by a mayor and city council. The citizens are served by more than 50 churches, a community hospital, public school system, three private schools, and more than 100 service organizations. New Hope School and Industry provides education and employment for the countys handicapped. The Mount Vernon Developmental Center, operated by the state, provides services to 400 clients. Mount Vernon enjoys an adequate supply of dedicated and skilled physicians and dentists. The Mount Vernon school system includes a Career Center that also provides adult education through Central Ohio Technical College. The private schools are: Christian Star Academy, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, and Mount Vernon Academy (supported by the Seventh-day Adventist Church). Mount Vernon Nazarene College, established in 1967, has an enrollment of 2,100 students. Civic buildings are well maintained and community pride is evident by the restoration of the beautiful architecture in buildings and private homes.
